There are two options, both clear lenses with no yellow tint. The easiest way to tell them apart is the colour of the reflection on the lens surface. Before that, though, it's worth being straight with you about what these coatings do and don't do.
An anti-reflective coating tuned to reflect back a portion of the blue light coming off your screens. You'll notice a faint blue sheen on the lens in certain light — that reflection is the coating at work.
Essilor's selective version. Rather than dampening blue light across the board, it targets a narrower blue-violet band (roughly 400–455 nm) while deliberately letting blue-turquoise light through — the part involved in your sleep-wake cycle. Its signature is a subtle, rather beautiful violet reflection. It's also a full Crizal coating, so the anti-glare, scratch resistance and UV protection come as standard.
Search online and you'll find blue-light lenses credited with almost anything — preventing macular degeneration, fixing your sleep, curing headaches, eliminating eye strain. We're not going to repeat those claims, because the evidence doesn't support them. The most thorough review to date (Cochrane, 2023, pooling 17 controlled trials) found blue-light filtering lenses probably make no measurable difference to eye strain, sleep quality or retinal health.
That said — plenty of our patients tell us their eyes feel more comfortable on long screen days, and that's worth something. The coating does no harm, and on a Crizal lens the anti-glare and UV protection are genuinely well established regardless. So we're happy to fit it if you want it. We just won't sell it to you on a promise we can't stand behind.
One more thing: those cheap blue-light "tester" torches sold online aren't a real measurement — they emit at the very edge of UV and often make properly made branded lenses look like they're doing nothing. Bring your lenses in and we'll show you what they actually do.
